While building owners generally have until August 9, 2025 to comply with the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) inspection requirements for pre-1960 buildings, if a child under the age of 6 is living in a unit, the building owner must schedule an XRF inspection ( Lead Paint Inspections ) within one year from the date the child started residing there (by August 9, 2021) in order to comply with the local law and protect the child from the harmful effects of lead exposure.
Under Local Law 31 in New York City, a child under 6 is considered to "reside" in a dwelling unit if they either live there or spend 10 or more hours per week there. X-ray fluorescence testing is required for pre-1960 buildings where a child in this age range lives or regularly spends time to protect them from lead exposure.
